Acupuncture For
Stress, Anxiety & Sleep
Stress, anxiety, racing thoughts, and restless nights bring many people to our clinics in Waimea and Kona. This is one of our favorite things to treat, and one of the most rewarding. Whatever brings someone in, whether it's a sore back or a stiff knee, we very often see their sleep improve and a sense of calm and peace return along the way.
In our experience, acupuncture helps the nervous system settle, giving the body a chance to remember what peace feels like.
What We See
Side Effects Worth Having
Every treatment has side effects, and acupuncture is no exception. The ones we see most often are the kind people are happy to have.
Deeper Sleep
Falling asleep more easily, sleeping more soundly, and waking up feeling rested.
Calm & Peace
A quieter mind and a steadier feeling, even when life stays busy.
Energy & Appetite
More energy through the day and a healthier appetite, as the body stops running on emergency power.
How It Works
Resetting the Switch
Calm is our natural state
Our natural state is one of relaxation: a peaceful readiness. But daily life can keep us feeling that we constantly need to protect and defend ourselves, that we're not quite safe, or that we have to stay in fight-or-flight mode just to survive or keep up.
Stress feeds on itself
Our bodies aren't designed to live in those states. The emotions we feel release chemicals into the body, and when those are stress chemicals, they deepen the feeling of stress. It becomes a loop that's hard to step out of on our own.
Acupuncture can help you find it again
Acupuncture helps the mind and body settle into a calm, reset state, where your natural healing ability can take over. It reminds the body how it feels to enter that place of deep stillness and peace.
A Treatment of Its Own
Focusing on Anxiety Directly
Calm isn't only a side effect. When anxiety, stress, or poor sleep is what brings you in, we focus on it directly.
Calming the vagus nerve
The vagus nerve is the body's main calming pathway. It runs from the brain down through the neck to the heart and gut, and it helps switch on the rest-and-digest side of the nervous system. We use points that help settle it, including a point on the ear where a branch of the nerve comes close to the surface, and very gentle work along the side of the neck.
Settling the heart and mind
We also use traditional points on the wrist and inner forearm that have long been used to quiet the heart and mind, ease a racing chest, and help with sleep.
Gentle and deeply relaxing
This work is very light, and people tell us they love how it feels. Many notice their breathing slow and their body soften within minutes of lying down.
Still Water
When the Water Is Calm
When water is disturbed, we can only see its surface. But when it becomes still and calm, three things happen.
When the mind becomes calm like still water, it acts as a reset switch, and the body's own ability to heal can take over.
During Treatment
From Survival to Rest
When the body shifts into this calm state, stress hormones tend to settle and the rest-and-digest side of the nervous system switches on. Many people hear their stomach start to gurgle. That's a good sign that they're entering this peaceful state.
When we're running from a tiger, we don't want to eat. When we feel calm and safe, it's time to eat, to create, and to heal. That is our natural state, and treatment reminds the body how to find it again.
Going Deeper
Other Ways We Help
Many people also love how a treatment ends. Jason often finishes with gentle craniosacral therapy, which helps the nervous system settle even more deeply. Andrea finishes with a warming herbal moxa salve she makes herself, rubbed into the shoulders and back. Herbal medicine can also support sleep and calm between visits.

Acupuncture works well alongside the care you get from your doctor. If you take medication for anxiety, depression, or sleep, please don't stop or change it without talking to the doctor who prescribed it.
