Before You Call

Common Questions

Is acupuncture painful?

Acupuncture needles are about the diameter of a hair, and usually only a very mild sensation is felt, if any at all. We adjust needle depth and technique to your body and how it responds. Most patients report feeling deeply relaxed, and many fall asleep on the table.

How many treatments will I need?

There are no packages. You book one visit at a time and keep coming only if you feel it’s helping, and we can usually tell after the first or second treatment. Often the pain eases for a day or so after the first visit. After the second, it tends to come back less often and stay away longer. Some people only need one session. Every body responds differently, so we start gently and adjust from there. Once the pain has stayed away for a week, we move to every two weeks, then every three weeks, and then monthly for maintenance, as needed or as you like. Acupuncture doesn’t help everyone. If things aren’t changing after a few visits, we’ll tell you honestly and talk about other options.

What do you most often treat?

The style we practice is well suited to orthopedic problems. The conditions we see most often are shoulder, neck, low back, knee, and ankle pain, along with stress, anxiety, and poor sleep.

Can moxa leave a scar?

Burning small cones of moxa on the skin can occasionally cause a blister, which may leave a mark depending on your skin type. This is rare: we apply a protective herbal ointment first and keep the heat within your comfort level. If a mark does occur, it usually fades completely over time. Moxa is never required, and if you would rather not have it, just let us know.

What should I wear?

Whatever you're comfortable in. We treat along the whole back, so most people undress to their underwear; shorts or loose pants that roll above the knee are fine too. Women are welcome to keep a bra or sports bra on. For sciatic pain we may need to reach the hip and glute area, if you're comfortable with that. You'll be covered with a sheet and blanket throughout, and your comfort always comes first.

How much is a visit, and how long does it take?

An acupuncture visit is $160 and takes about 75 minutes from arrival to leaving. We stay with you through the treatment and give moxa about as much time as the needles. If you’d rather rest quietly with the needles in, just let us know, and we’ll step out and come back to finish. A craniosacral therapy session on its own is $140 and takes about 60 minutes.

Do you take insurance?

We don't bill insurance directly, and payment is due at the time of your visit. If you ask, either of us will give you a form with the treatment and diagnosis codes that you can submit to your insurer for possible reimbursement. Coverage varies from plan to plan, so it's worth checking with your insurer first.

How can I pay?

Cash, card, or check, at the time of your visit. There is no added fee for paying by card.

How do I book?

By phone or text. Call or text either of us and we’ll find a time that works.
